Picking up a new McVitie’s Penguin cake bar series

One of McVitie’s classic confectionery lines, the Penguin Cake Bar is due for a key boost this month with the arrival of two new variants to bolster its range, reports Neill Barston.
The brand, which is manufactured by the global pladis group, believed there was a strong demand for the classic treat, which is now being made available in Strawberry Milkshake form, as well as a further Chocolate Milkshake option.
As the company noted, the popular Penguin brand – bars and cake bars – have 22.8% penetration and an impressive brand awareness of 95% among consumers, who have long favoured the confectionery series.
“These deliciously soft cake bars with milkshake flavoured cream are inspired by the trending concept of milkshake flavours, bringing a fun and indulgent twist to the beloved Penguin brand,” explains Zeynep Daghan Erol, Brand Manager, pladis UK&I.
“We are building on the popularity of our original Penguin Cake Bar, which has a rich and creamy chocolate filling layered on a delicious spongey base. We have introduced what we know are two popular milkshake flavours to our cake bars, and they performed particularly well in testing, where 69% of consumers found Penguin Milkshake concept to be unique and 81% expressed strong interest in trying and purchasing it1.
“The cake bars are individually wrapped for convenience, and are a great on-the-go treat or lunchtime snack.”
The five packs of McVitie’s Penguin Strawberry Milkshake Cake Bar and McVitie’s Penguin Chocolate Milkshake Cake Bar (RRP £1.75) are on-shelf in Morrisons from Monday 24 March before rolling out more widely to other multiple retailers, convenience stores and wholesale depots from mid-April.
